Tips and Common Questions

How to ask for things

The best way to get what you want is to constructively ask for it. You can encourage the behavior you want by following these 5 principles:

  • Make your statement of what you want as short as possible.
  • Avoid spontaneity & wait for the right time and place.
  • Find something positive to say as a last comment.
  • Affirm past positive performance.
  • Do it privately if possible!
My husband is always getting ready to say what he wants to say rather than listening to what I am saying.

This is a common problem among couples and it is not always the husband who has this problem. Try asking your husband to tell you what you said before he tells you what is on his mind. This is called reflective listening and can greatly help your communication.

My spouse frequently interrupts me before I am through saying what I want to say.

You might try telling him about the problem and the next time he interrupts, stop talking until you have his attention, then, continue what you had to say.

My partner leaves the TV on while we are discussing an important issue.

Why not ask him to turn the TV off.

My spouse wants to talk when I am tired from a long day. I love my spouse ....

Ask your spouse to give you a half hour of relaxation before engaging you in conversation.. Then possibly find a place where you can comfortably be alone for a period.

My spouse gets angry when I bring up a topic about which we have a difference of opinion.

Carefully choose the best time and place to discuss difficult disagreements. Then try talking about points of agreement before approaching your disagreement, Be considerate of your partner’s point of view, even when disagreeing and when appropriate be willing to compromise.
